Executive meeting. The financial figures for 1998 were confirmed and
the 1999 operating budget was amended with updated figures.
January 6-28
Our Youth Employees, Dana Petersen and Monique Reimer, installed computers
into thirteen communities and SyGate networking software was installed
in two branches.
February 3-18
Monique Reimer and Dana Petersen installed computers into nine libraries
and installed SyGate networking software into two branches. The remainder
of the month was concentrated on documenting additional instructions and
a second round of training for many branch staff.
February 4
Myra Leyshon and Lynnette Butts journeyed to Herbert to begin training
branch staff in the operation of Dynix software.
February 8
Myra Leyshon and Aidan Meegan attended a Summer Reading Program meeting
at the Provincial Library. The theme for the 1999 program will be "Summer
Magic".
February 16
Aidan Meegan unveiled her Swift Current Branch website that has been
mounted on the city server. The website address is
March 6
Executive meeting. Past due levies have been received from the Village
of Ernfold and the Nekaneet Indian Band and library privileges have been
restored to both communities. Additional opening hours have been granted
to the Branch Libraries in Maple Creek and Gull Lake.
March 19
The regional librarian attended a meeting at Regina Public Library
to discuss a "Saskatchewan Sustainability Strategy" for the long-term provision
of public Internet access in libraries.
March 30-31
Michael Keaschuk attended the initial meeting of the Multitype Library
Board.
April 17
Executive and Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting was attended by 40
delegates representing 41 municipalities. Topics for discussion included
the work of the Saskatchewan Sustainability Committee and the passage of
two regional library bylaws. Linda Linnen was returned as chairman and
Larry Knelsen replaces Allen Kuhlmann as a representative for Rural Municipalities.
May 6
Executive members, Krystine Snow and Bob Jamieson, and Headquarters
staff, John Carlson and Michael Keaschuk, were in attendance at the Grand
Opening of the new Gull Lake Branch facilities.
May 13-15
The SLA/SLTA Conference, "Challenges in libraries, here and now", summoned
it members to Waskesiu. Executive members attending included Linda Linnen
and Etiennette Binette and staff members included Myra Leyshon, Aidan Meegan,
Michael Keaschuk, and Burstall Branch librarian, Judith Winter. A Chair/Director
meeting preceded the conference program.
June 2
Myra Leyshon, Doreen Roberts, and Aidan Meegan attended a user's workshop
for the Queen's Printer website.
Monique Reimer was officially hired for 17 weeks through the Industry Canada's Youth Employment program.
June 3
Myra Leyshon and Lynnette Butts provided the first Dynix training session
for Gull Lake Branch staff.
June 7
Eighteen branch librarians, 14 assistants, and 2 local board chairs
representing 20 branch libraries attended our annual Branch Workshop at
Headquarters. Discussion of issues, operations and programs was the focus
of the morning session. In the afternoon, computer related topics were
addressed with the assistance of Provincial Library staff.
June 9
Shirley Syrenne and Michael Keaschuk travelled to Saskatoon to attend
a PSAAB workshop (municipal accounting and financial reporting.)
June 10-11
Chinook's annual booksale, located at the Wheatland Mall, raised $1,369.76.
The Kiwanis Club of Prairie Pioneers and other volunteers supervised the
sale.
June 16-19
Aidan Meegan and Michael Keaschuk attended the Canadian Library Association
Annual Conference in Toronto. The conference theme was "Facing the Challenges:
a Practical Survival Guide."
August 9-15
Summer Reading Program 1999: Mr. Z (Warren Zimmerman) touring performer
visited ten branch libraries.
August 31
Lynnette Butts attended a meeting in Moose Jaw as a member of a committee
examining cataloguing aspects for proposed gateway software.
The regional librarian began his annual tour of branch libraries by accompanying John Carlson on block exchanges.
September 2
Executive meeting. Headquarters 56K internet connection will be replaced
by a high-speed Internet connection. Computers formerly used in the Headquarters
network will be placed in branch libraries requiring them. A new telephone
system and new mailing equipment were approved for purchase.
September 27
Morse Branch was connected to the Internet. Training sessions were
conducted for both staff and the public.
September 29
Monique Reimer completed her seventeen-week term of Youth Employment.
Monique assisted the region with the installation of computers in branch
libraries and provided training for branch staff and the public in the
use of the Internet and related library operations.
October 17 -23
Saskatchewan Library Week. Area performers, Ann Slade and Doris Bircham,
provided an evening of poetry and song (Prairie Women II) in the communities
Maple Creek, Ponteix, Climax, Tompkins, and Swift Current. The Saskatchewan
Library Association organized the week and the theme selected was GET CONNECTED
TO SAKATCHEWAN LIBRARIES: A resource for all ages.
October 29
Headquarters Internet connection is now through a high-speed line.
Although the region is now responsible for the monthly charge, Provincial
Library will issue a one-time grant of $7,440.00 upon the disconnection
of the previously used 56K line.
November 20
Executive Meeting. Chinook's Y2K Contingency Plan was adopted. Joylene
Campbell and Marilyn Jenkins of the Provincial Library met with the executive
to discuss potential changes to the Regulations of the Public Libraries
Act.
Thirty-eight of one hundred and one municipalities were represented at the Fall Board Meeting. Topics of discussion included computer activity, the recent CRTC decision, and changes in accounting practices for all library systems. A municipal levy increase of $0.25 was approved for towns, villages, and rural municipalities and a $0.50 increase is being requested from the City of Swift Current for 2000.
November 25
Michael Keaschuk, representing Saskatchewan public libraries, met with
the National Librarian, Roch Carrier, in an information-gathering meeting
in Saskatoon.
