1999 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT

Return to Annual Report Contents

The Industry Canada Employment Program again enabled the Region to employ Monique Reimer and Dana Petersen to install computers into 22 libraries and install networking software into tour branches. The Youth Employees also spent considerable time documenting instructions and held a second round of training for several branch staff. Without the significant funds we received through grants from the federal and provincial governments for computer hardware and youth employment, we would not have 33 communities connected to the electronic world of the Internet.

The Villages of Beaver Flat, Emfold, Shamrock and Waldeck have not signed the Library Agreement. A levy increase for the year 2000 was approved at the region's Fall Board Meeting. The per capita for towns, villages and rural municipalities will increase $0.25 while the per capita for the City is budgeted at $0.50. The past due levies have been received from the Village of Emfold and the Nekaneet Indian Band and library privileges have been restored in both communities.

Additional opening hours have been granted to the Branch Libraries at Abbey, Chaplin, Gravelbourg, Gull Lake, Herbert and Maple Creek. The Gull Lake Branch Library held the Grand Opening of their new facility on May 6 with two Executive members as well as Regional Librarian Michael Keaschuk, and Headquarters Staff Member John Carlson in attendance. I would like to congratulate the community of Gull Lake and the Local Library Board in achieving their goal of a new Library.

Our Annual Branch Workshop in June was again well attended with representation from 20 branch libraries.

The theme for the Summer Reading Program was "Summer Magic" and a special penformance by Mr. Z was held in 10 branch libraries during the early part of August.

The Internet connection at Headquarters is now through a high-speed line and the region will be responsible for the monthly charges for this line. Provincial Library is issuing a one-time grant of $7,440.00 once the previous 56k line is disconnected.
As you can see from the reports as well as the highlights we have again had a very busy year with fortunately no Y2k problems. In closing, on behalf of the Executive and Board, I would like to thank our Dedicated Staff for a "Job Well Done" in 1999.

Submitted on behalf of the Executive,
Linda Linnen, Chairman
